Sam Shaber: Life, Death & Duran Duran
Co-written and directed by Fringe First winner
Lynn Ferguson

Life has three guarantees: you're born, you die and if your name is Rio, you dance on the sand. New York indie rocker Sam Shaber was born hungry like the wolf for rock stardom. But what if you never get to join the band? Maybe you grow up to sing about life and death instead.

Sam Shaber tells personal stories of rising above the hand you're dealt in this hour-long, multimedia, musical storytelling show. Each moment of loss is balanced with a vignette of Shaber as her obsessive, pre-teen, Durannie self; piercing her own ear with a push pin, or declaring herself a future worldwide rock star. In the end, the loved ones we've lost become a part of us forever. This is what keeps us dancing on the sand.

Sam Shaber: Life, Death & Duran Duran had its world premiere at the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, presented by the Gilded Balloon, after three previews at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre in Burbank, CA.

"*****A winning raconteur. Sam Shaber is a highly intelligent and compelling performer." - British Theatre Guide

“What a performer! Life, Death & Duran Duran was one of my highlights of the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe. This show is life-affirming and funny as well as poignant. A must-see.” - Janice Forsyth, BBC Scotland

"Shaber displays her bright vocals on her own compositions, switching from electric to folk guitar, often neatly seguing into some of her idols' songs. Shaber's warmth and sincerity mean that the show, while emotionally raw, is never maudlin." - The Times

"The stories are heartfelt and her singing is stunning. She owns the stage when she sings." - Three Weeks

"Sam weaves together her life's journeys into a coherent and satisfying whole. Life, Death & Duran Duran is solid storytelling: unapologetic about both its sentimentality and compassion." - The List

“A beautifully performed and written monologue with incredibly catchy songs, Sam’s show was a joy to have as part of our programme in 2017. We’d love to have her back in the future!” - Katy Koren, Gilded Balloon
